Tinder: Swipe right on data privacy, please.
The petition to Tinder reads:
Tinder, it’s time to step up. Individuals trust dating apps with some of their most sensitive information. Right now, that data isn’t as safe as it should be. We urge you to take urgent action to protect our private information, make any data collection consent-based, and deliver clear transparency reports on user data requests.
Right now--at a time when we need it most--Tinder is not doing enough to protect our very personal and sensitive information.
Users go on dating apps looking for connection and love, only to become data gold mines for dating app companies like Tinder. Without stronger protections, our private information on these apps can be collected by data brokers, sold off, or accessed by bad actors.
As threats to immigrant communities, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ+ protections grow, Tinder--the world’s most popular dating app--must do better. To create a safer and more secure dating experience, UltraViolet has joined forces with women’s rights and digital rights advocates to demand change. Together, we are calling on Tinder to:
- Implement end-to-end encryption of DMs to ensure private conversations stay private.
- Give users control over their data by making third-party data sharing opt-in and requiring clear permission for AI training. (that’s when an algorithm gets developed using user data)
- Provide regular transparency reports showing how often government and law enforcement agencies request user data--and what Tinder does in response.
