Miscarriages are not crimes
Tell Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt:
Immediately release Brittney Poolaw!
Why is this important?
After Brittany Poolaw suffered a miscarriage at 17 weeks pregnant, she was arrested for manslaughter.
When Poolaw was hospitalized for her miscarriage, she was honest with the staff about drug use during her pregnancy--honesty that is critical for sound medical treatment and should remain confidential. But instead, the hospital reported Poolaw, and Oklahoma imprisoned her. And after a trial lasting just one day, a jury sentenced the 21-year-old to four years in prison.
The judge in the case instructed the jury to view the fetus as a person and let the jury decide on manslaughter. More than 1,250 people have been arrested for pregnancy-related offenses since 2006, and the National Advocates for Pregnant Women are sounding the alarm about the epidemic of treating miscarriages--something out of the parent’s control--as a crime.
No person should go to jail for having a miscarriage.
A grassroots uprising is needed to call attention to her case, and we’re asking you to add your voice calling on Oklahoma to release Brittney Poolaw and reverse the verdict.
