Two NYPD detectives raped a teenager while she was in handcuffs. Now, the department is defending them by claiming it was consensual.
No one can consent to sex in police custody. Period. A grand jury is convening to decide if these detectives, Edward Martins and Richard Hall, can be charged. The grand jury process is notorious for letting cops off with zero consequences--particularly if the prosecutor doesn't make a strong case because he works so closely with the police. One way to pressure the prosecutor would be to force New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to weigh in and put a spotlight on this case.
DeBlasio is in the middle of a reelection campaign, so the last thing he wants is to look soft on both police brutality AND sexual assault when he's relying on women and people of color to vote for him. If we generate enough outrage right now, he'll be forced to step in and push the DA to aggressively prosecute the detectives. Will you add your name to demand that both detectives are held accountable and that the NYPD clean up its ranks to make sure an assault like this doesn't happen again?
