The petition to GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan reads:
We are living in an unprecedented time in the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is raiding communities using online mass surveillance tools like ShadowDragon's SocialNet, which claims to be scraping data from hundreds of daily websites, including GoFundMe. Community members impacted by the raids and violence from police and national troops are then forced to raise money on GoFundMe to defend themselves. It's a terrifying loop, and we are calling on your company, which collects and depends on our data, to make sure ShadowDragon and any other mass surveillance tools do not have access to it. Specifically, we want you to: Protect our data. Proactively detect and block surveillance tools like ShadowDragon's SocialNet, which exploit the data we share with these websites and services. Increase transparency. Publicly report known attempts by surveillance contractors like ShadowDragon to access user data, and what measures you have taken to stop and prevent them. The first step is putting out a statement about protection from scraping on GoFundMe in the wake of heightened surveillance. Strengthen privacy protections. Limit the exposure of our sensitive data and make privacy the default--so firms like ShadowDragon can't easily exploit our conversations, connections, and activities online.
