"You promised you wouldn't hurt me."
Those were Natasha McKenna's last words before she was killed by six Fairfax County police officers. Natasha was 5'3" and suffered from mental illness, and she was beaten to death by officers in full riot gear while she was handcuffed and shackled.
Natasha is just one of countless Black women whose death at the hands of law enforcement didn't make the nightly news or spark huge protests. And three months into a county investigation into her death, officials have done nothing to hold her killers accountable. That's why we need state officials to step in NOW.
Today nationwide, people are taking to the streets and online as part of a day of action to spotlight state violence against Black women--and we're calling on the Virginia State Attorney General to launch an independent investigation into Natasha's death. As an elected official, the Attorney General has to respond to public pressure. If enough of us speak out, we can play a role in demanding justice for Natasha--and send a message to law enforcement agencies everywhere that we won't stand by while Black women are killed with no recourse.
