Pass the For the People Act

    Tell Congress

Pass H.R. 1 the For the People Act, to stop Republicans’ war on voting rights

    Why is this important?

Texas Republicans are racing to pass sweeping voter suppression legislation that not only makes it harder to vote, but even allows partisan Republican judges to throw out election results entirely with no evidence of voter fraud.

Last week, Texas Democrats heroically stepped up to delay passage of this bill by walking out on final hours of the state legislative session and denying the necessary quorum for the passage of a bill. But the governor of Texas is calling a special session to ram through the bill later this summer, and there’s nothing Democratic state legislators will be able to do to stop it.

We need federal voting rights legislation right now, and with Democrats in charge of both houses of Congress and the White House, there’s no excuse for not getting it done.

Ever since Donald Trump began telling his Big Lie that the election was stolen, Republicans have been waging the biggest attack on voting rights since Jim Crow, with at least 22 new laws restricting voting rights across 14 states as of May 14, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

But the Texas voter suppression bill would revise nearly every aspect of the voting process. The bill ratchets up voting-by-mail restrictions, curbs local voting options like drive-thru voting, punishes and restricts “souls to the polls” Sunday early voting.

The bill would make it a state jail felony for local officials to send mail-in ballot applications to voters who did not request them or to provide those applications to community groups to help get out the vote. It would also make it easier for Republicans to harass and intimidate voters by granting partisan poll-watchers “free movement” within a polling place. And just in case Republicans still lose elections despite these changes, they added a last-minute change that would allow partisan judges to toss out election results.

It’s up to Congress to pass strong voting rights legislation now—but we’re running out of time. If we Congress doesn’t act soon, it will be too late to prevent these laws from going into effect before the 2022 midterms. And if Republicans win back either house of Congress, they will be positioned to steal the White House in 2024.
