Congress must protect the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people

Congress must protect the rights of women and LGBTQ+ people

    The petition to Congress reads:

Vote YES on the Defend the Fourteenth Amendment Resolution. The 14th Amendment is the foundation of nearly every right women and LGBTQ+ people have won over the past 150 years. It was the basis for Roe v. Wade and the reason why same-sex couples can legally marry. It's also the basis for laws against workplace discrimination. I urge you to vote YES on the Defend the Fourteenth Amendment Resolution to affirm your commitment to defending the U.S. Constitution, and the civil rights and liberties of women and LGBTQ+ people.

From attacking birthright citizenship to allowing warrantless searches, the Trump administration has launched a full out war against the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.

The 14th Amendment extends citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the U.S., grants equal protection under the law and establishes due process. It’s the foundation of nearly every right women and LGBTQ+ people have won over the past 150 years. The 14th Amendment was the basis for Roe v. Wade and the reason why same-sex couples can legally marry. It's also the basis for laws against workplace discrimination. If the Trump administration continues to attack the 14th Amendment, we could lose the rights and protections that allow us to live free and full lives.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib just introduced a resolution that would force members of Congress to publicly commit to defending the 14th Amendment. Supporting this resolution isn’t a partisan issue. It’s the bare minimum we should expect from our elected leaders.

Every member of Congress must go on record: Will you protect the U.S. Constitution and the 14th Amendment? A YES vote on Rep. Tlaib’s resolution is the only acceptable answer.
