Tell Social Media Companies: Stop the spread of abortion lies!
It's bad enough that conservative extremists have, for decades, intimidated abortion clinic workers and patients with death threats and even physical violence. Now they have taken to social media and are making scared patients believe that abortion is already illegal and unsafe in the United States.
Why is this important?
Ever since the Supreme Court leaked the draft of a majority opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that ensures the right to privacy and legalizes abortion in all 50 states, the far right has declared victory and taken to social media with its anti-abortion propaganda.
They are circulating many of these lies on social media, and platforms aren't doing anything about it.
Rather than profit from these lies, social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok need to own their responsibility for these baseless attacks and take down these harmful social media posts immediately--including the ones in Spanish, which is the second most spoken language in the United States!
Even if Roe v. Wade were overturned, as the leaked draft opinion suggests it will be, full access to abortion services would still be legal in half of states. We're calling on Big Tech to protect people's lives and share the facts, not clickbait!
The spread of abortion care mis- and disinformation online could very quickly lead to another public health crisis. Big Tech needs to treat abortion disinformation for what it really is: dangerous medical disinformation.
Tell social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok that they are endangering people's lives by allowing the spread of abortion lies on their platforms.
