Tell Instagram head Adam Mosseri: Remove Instagram's map feature now!

The petition to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, reads:

Remove Instagram's new, dangerous map feature, which creates needless privacy risks, particularly for survivors of gender-based violence, women and pregnant people seeking reproductive health care, and children.

Last Wednesday, August 6th, Meta announced a set of new Instagram features, including a map feature that allows you to see other users' locations. According to Meta, the goal of the map is to "stay up-to-date with friends" by allowing users to "see content your friends and favorite creators are posting from interesting or fun locations."

But in this moment, as President Donald Trump lays the groundwork for martial law in Washington, D.C. and continues to collaborate with Big Tech to monitor individuals, nothing about Instagram's new feature seems fun to us. In fact, it sounds terrifying, particularly for Instagram's vulnerable users, including women, trans people, protesters, children, people escaping domestic violence, abortion seekers, and immigrants. 

The bottom line is that there is simply no need for this feature on Instagram, which puts our rights and lives at risk. Tell Instagram: Don't give the government and abusers another tool with which to surveil and harm us!
