Tell Worcester City Council: Police Must Stop Brutalizing our Communities for ICE

Tell Worcester City Council: Police Must Stop Brutalizing our Communities for ICE

The Petition to Worcester City Council reads:

In a violent video posted online last week, Worcester police were caught helping federal immigration agents violently separate a mother from her children even though Worcester City Council members, including Mayor Joseph Petty and City Manager Eric Batista, had promised that local police would not collaborate with federal immigration enforcement. This is unacceptable. We’re calling on you to keep your word and immediately:

    1. Pass sanctuary city policies to stop local police from working with ICE.
    2. Hold accountable the police chief and individual officers who helped ICE on May 8.

On May 8, Worcester police officers were caught on video violently separating a mother from her baby and 16-year-old daughter. They were acting on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who refused to identify themselves, show badges, or produce warrants. In the video, you can hear community members yelling, “You’re not supposed to work with ICE!” as the officers slammed the teen girl’s face into the ground.

Why not? Because in January, Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty and City Manager Eric Batista promised citizens that local police wouldn’t help federal immigration enforcement agencies, including ICE.

What happened in Worcester can happen in any city in Massachusetts, which is why we’re calling on all of our members in the state to demand that Worcester lawmakers keep their word, pass a sanctuary city ordinance to stop local police from working with ICE, and hold the police accountable for working with ICE on May 8. Will you add your name now?

Note: The Worcester City Council will discuss this issue during meetings happening Tuesday and Wednesday this week, so as soon as you sign the petition, we’ll direct you to another page where you can call Worcester City Council members directly. Calling just takes five minutes and could have a significant impact.
