Three months ago, Sheneque Proctor died alone in a jail cell after police ignored her pleas for medical attention. Today, her family is still trying to find out what happened to her that night. Despite the outcry from her community, officials are dodging questions and no one has been held accountable for her death.
Far too many Black families have lost loved ones in the hands of a justice system that repeatedly fails to protect people of color and women. Sheneque Proctor adds to a long list of names claimed by that justice system: Eric Garner, Shantel Davis, Rekia Boyd, Tamir Rice, and countless more. Their lives matter and so does Sheneque's.
We must demand justice for Sheneque. We've done it before when Marissa Alexander was facing 60 years in prison for firing a warning shot to fend off her abuser, and for Renisha McBride, who was shot and killed for knocking on a door to seek help after an accident. Now we must demand justice for Sheneque and her family--and it starts with a federal investigation into her death.
