Why is this important?
The repeal of Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction is absurd, shameful and dangerous. His conviction was overturned for procedural reasons not a lack of evidence of guilt. This terrible turn of events is a stark reminder that the US criminal justice system doesn't take sexual violence cases seriously and that the majority of survivors of sexual abuse are treated unfairly by the courts.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has publicly committed to retrying Weinstein, but we need to make sure he follows through. It's more important than ever that we back survivors by demanding that the court moves quickly and conducts the retrial in a trauma-informed way.
