Tell Congress: Reject Ted Cruz’s Dangerous AI SANDBOX Act!
The petition to Congress, and in particular the Senate Subcommittee on Science, Manufacturing, and Competitiveness reads:
Fight to make sure that Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) SANDBOX Act does not pass. The Act could allow the White House to unilaterally exempt AI companies from nearly any federal regulation for an initial period of two years, renewable up to four times for a total of one decade. Regulatory “sandboxes” are typically used for niche regulations with low safety concerns. AI is far from niche and the stakes could not be higher, especially for women and children. From deepfake porn abuse to sexually suggestive chatbots to sexist AI models, women and children are at a heightened risk of unregulated AI. We have only begun moving in the right direction with regulating AI for public safety. This bill would set us back years.
Two weeks ago, Cruz unveiled the AI “SANDBOX Act,” could allow the White House to unilaterally exempt artificial intelligence (AI) companies from nearly any federal regulation.
The implications are terrifying, especially for women and children who are at heightened risk of being targeted, scammed, or abused by or through the use of AI.
We want to make sure Congress knows that there’s massive opposition to allowing AI companies to go unchecked. Beating this bill is not just important, but it's winnable.
Just a few months ago, in July, we won big when our UltraViolet community helped remove Cruz's propose 10-year moratorium on state-level AI regulation from Trump’s Big Bad Bill. The moratorium would have prevented states from creating or enforcing laws on AI. Now, Cruz is trying another avenue, which could be even worse. Sign now to demand Congress fight this bill to make sure our federal laws apply to all, without playing favorites to powerful tech companies.
