Tell LA Mayor Karen Bass and LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell: Don't put GeoSpy in LAPD's hands
The petition to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell reads:
Do not allow LAPD to procure GeoSpy, a powerful AI tool that can pinpoint the location of photos and videos. Resist all efforts to integrate more AI tools into LAPD without thorough vetting. Prioritize resisting ICE and protecting our sanctuary city and sanctuary state over efforts to increase surveillance.
From Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to Donald Trump deploying the National Guard, LA is serving as our state's battleground for the fight to protect democracy. But at a time when Californians most need to feel protected--and not surveilled--by our cities and state, LAPD has been found to be collaborating with ICE despite Los Angeles's sanctuary city status.
And now, LAPD is showing interest in using GeoSpy, a powerful and potentially very dangerous AI (artificial intelligence) tool that claims to pinpoint exact locations of photos and videos. What’s happening in LA--our state's current battleground for the fight to protect democracy--could happen in your city, too. That’s why all Calfornians need to pay attention to the surveillance tech LAPD is considering adopting and demand city officials take action to stop it.
The news of LAPD's interest in GeoSpy could not come at a worse time. Not only are daily ICE raids wreaking havoc on our communities, but GeoSpy's founder Dan Heinen shared a video demonstrating how the AI tool can be used to retaliate against undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities, specifically using Los Angeles as an example.
Mayor Bass regularly speaks out against Trump's deployment of the National Guard in LA, as well as its immigration raids. Yet LAPD has been accused of collaborating with ICE, giving them a backdoor into surveillance tools that are supposed to only be used by local police departments, not federal agencies like ICE.
We want less talk and more action from our city leaders, starting with Mayor Bass and the LAPD. That means not buying AI products that are tools for finding and punishing our immigrant siblings--and prioritizing efforts that actually resist ICE instead of enabling it.
