    Max Miller must resign

    Max Miller must resign

The petition to Representative Max Miller reads:

I believe women and survivors of gender-based violence, and I am calling on YOU, Representative Max Miller, to immediately resign from Congress.

The credible allegations against you from both your ex-wife and a former girlfriend are egregious and show a pattern of violent behavior towards women. As a community of survivors and allies, we urge you to do the right thing, step down now and seek professional help.

The American people deserve elected representatives who reject gender-based violence in all its forms.

Rep. Max Miller has got to go. Here's what reporting indicates about Miller's alleged pattern of violent behavior so far:

    • Two women have sought restraining orders against Miller for intimate partner violence. He has owned up to at least one of the incidents, which he has dismissed as "horseplay."
    • A third woman said that when Miller was in high school, he pushed her down some stairs after he became enraged when she resisted his attempts to touch her. The woman described the incident as "one of the more traumatic nights of her life."
    • When his now ex-wife Emily Moreno told him she was going to leave him, he allegedly threw hot water on her from a pan of eggs he had just cooked, causing her to fall to the floor.
    • Moreno, who is the daughter of Senator Bernie Moreno, also said that Miller has held a gun to her head and physically abused her and their two-year-old daughter.
    • Miller's former father-in-law, Senator Moreno, called on Miller to resign from the House of Representatives, saying, "I believe Max Miller needs to seek professional help to end the clear pattern of abuse he has left in his wake. I believe he should not be free to continue endangering others until he does."

If this were not disqualifying enough, a former White House Press Secretary and girlfriend of Miller's, Stephanie Grisham, has also accused him of domestic violence and has sought out a restraining order.

Republicans have chalked up Miller's behavior as a "private family matter," but the American public isn't buying that excuse: domestic violence is a SERIOUS CRIME. Calling allegations of domestic violence a "private family matter" is outdated rhetoric that has historically been used to excuse abuse, silence survivors, and shield their abusers from accountability. This language has been used for decades to argue against treating domestic violence like the crime and public safety issue it is, and to fight efforts to strengthen protections for survivors, including the passage of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994.

While all of these allegations need to be properly investigated and Miller afforded due process, due to the severity of his alleged crimes and violent behavior, no one around Miller is safe, including his staffers and colleagues in Congress. He cannot credibly represent the women, families, and survivors in his district while facing these serious allegations.

Sign the petition now to demand Miller step down immediately.
