Meta: Expedite End-To-End Encryption Now!
The petition to Meta reads:
Meta must protect users from being criminalized by police for seeking an abortion. We are writing to you to demand your teams expedite the expansion of default end-to-end encryption on Messenger and in all private direct messaging within Meta platforms.
Why is this important?
Earlier this month, a Nebraska teenager was sentenced to 90 days in prison for having an abortion. Her mother faces five years for helping her access medication abortion pills. Meta had turned them in.
When local law enforcement officials suspected the teenager and her mother of acquiring abortion pills, they served Meta with a search warrant for the teen’s private Facebook messages, and the tech giant complied.
This blatant invasion of privacy was made possible because messages on Messenger are not fully encrypted by default. This means that Meta has access to private user chat logs that can be handed over to police.
Meta has committed to expanding default encryption to all Messenger chats, but it’s not moving fast enough, and people seeking abortion are paying the price.
Add your name now to demand that Meta expedite expansion of end-to-end encryption on Messenger, especially in states where abortion is heavily restricted or illegal.
