The media must stop sexist and racist coverage of women’s basketball!
Our petition to the media reads:
Stop the sexist and racist coverage of women’s basketball.
Why is this important?
Louisiana State University player Angel Reese has dominated on the court as one of the best players out there. She bested superstar player Caitlin Clark in the tournament last year and made it to the quarterfinals this year.
But the media continues to apply a standard to Reese and her counterparts that they would never use for male players.
Just this week, in 2024, the Los Angeles Times called Reese's team "dirty debutantes"--seemingly a slam on their decision to play tough while also wearing makeup on the court. The same article dubbed the majority-white UCLA team "America's sweethearts" while calling Louisiana State, a team of mostly Black women, "basketball villains." While the Times has since apologized to LSU for its coverage, the offending headline remains, and the double standard persists.
Last year during the tournament, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley criticized the media for its biased and unfair coverage. We don't want to see a repeat of that during this year's final four.
It's time for this sexist, racist coverage of women's basketball to stop. Will you sign our petition calling on media outlets to end their double standard when reporting on women's sports?
