Sign now: Demand OpenAI investigate Larry Summers' impact

The petition to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and the OpenAI board reads:

Open a probe to investigate the impact of Larry Summers' influence on OpenAI's technology, namely, ChatGPT and Sora. The House committee released emails showing years of personal correspondence between now-former OpenAI board member Summers and the late disgraced pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. These exchanges included Summers making sexist comments and asking Epstein for romantic advice. Given Summers' two-year tenure as an OpenAI board member, it is incumbent upon you to thoroughly investigate and report out Summers' influence on OpenAI decisions, tech, and policies. It is terrifying to consider how this individual, who held deeply sexist and racist views and was associated with a pedophile, may have impacted OpenAI tech, and particularly ChatGPT and Sora. It is especially important as your company rolls out sensitive features like ChatGPT erotica and ChatGPT for kids.

Most recently, Lawrence "Larry" Summers (former Treasury secretary and Harvard president) announced that he was resigning from OpenAI's board. This occurred after Congress released emails showing that Summers regularly corresponded with the late, disgraced pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

But Summers just stepping back is not enough. OpenAI leadership has an obligation to open a probe into Summers' influence on OpenAI policies and the development of ChatGPT and Sora. 

OpenAI's technology, ChatGPT, is becoming more embedded in all of our lives. It is being used to make decisions about our government, healthcare, and justice system. Its rollout over the past years has been messy and problematic. ChatGPT has been shown to have gender and racial bias, and to be riddled with sycophancy and prone to enflaming hallucinations. OpenAI is embroiled in multiple lawsuits for ChatGPT's role in enabling suicide among youth. And AI-enabled psychosis is a growing mental health concern, driven by the increasing ubiquity of AI without sufficient guardrails.

Now, OpenAI is rolling out new features like ChatGPT for teens and erotica AI. The newest version of the AI tool Sora, which is essentially ChatGPT for video, was introduced this fall and is already raising concerns about sexism and perversion. These developments only raise the stakes for the ethics of OpenAI's tech development.

Given that Summers has held well-documented racist and sexist views and was on OpenAI's board for two years during the rise of ChatGPT, OpenAI leadership has an obligation to open a probe into the influence of Summers on OpenAI policies and AI development. The fact that an Epstein confidant was influencing the most important and ubiquitous tech of our lifetime is nothing short of terrifying, especially for women and children. It must be investigated.
