Fox Entertainment needs to "Straight Up" fire Nigel Lythgoe
The petition to Fox Entertainment and Allison Wallach, president of unscripted programming, reads:
"Stop enabling, promoting, and profiting from abusers. Remove Nigel Lythgoe from 'So You Think You Can Dance' and keep him off the air."
Why is this important?
Musical artist Paula Abdul just filed a lawsuit against "American Idol" former executive producer and "So You Think You Can Dance" judge Nigel Lythgoe for sexual assault.
For survivors of sexual assault, the sordid details are all too familiar--and hardly surprising in an entertainment industry rife with abuse. Many powerful men like Lythgoe feel entitled to get what they want when they want it, and they view women like Abdul as dispensable.
Fox Entertainment just announced the next season of "So You Think You Can Dance" to air this year with Lythgoe as a judge and executive producer. We cannot stay silent while Fox profits from and promotes a known abuser.
Thanks to the advocacy of survivors and the #MeToo movement to pass laws that protect survivors, Abdul was able to file her lawsuit under California's Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, which went into effect a year ago and allows sexual abuse claims to be filed even after the statute of limitations has expired.
It's important to remember that most survivors never report their abuse, and many could take years to share their stories out of shame and fear of retaliation. For survivors in the entertainment and other highly competitive industries, the stakes are high, especially when the accused are the gatekeepers to the industry's most lucrative jobs.
Abdul is asking for a jury trial--so she is willing to put it all on the line and in public view. We must have her back!
