Tell Florida lawmakers: Defend direct democracy

The petition to Florida lawmakers reads:

Floridians should be able to vote on policies initiated by our communities. I urge you to defend direct democracy: Vote NO on HB 1205 and SB 7016 and oppose all legislation that makes it harder for everyday Floridians to submit and pass citizen-led ballot measures. A yes on these bills is a vote against Floridians and our ability to participate in democracy. We are paying attention and will hold you accountable. Vote NO on HB 1205 and SB 7016.

Last November, over 57% of Floridians voted yes on Amendment 4, a citizen-led ballot initiative to repeal our state’s near-total ban on abortion. But that wasn’t enough. That’s because Florida has the most stringent process for getting citizen-led measures on the ballot and requires a 60% supermajority of votes for them to pass.

Now, Governor Ron DeSantis and Florida’s gerrymandered Republican majority in the state legislature are trying to make it nearly impossible for everyday people like you and me to get citizen-led measures on the ballot--and even harder to pass them.

HB 1205 and SB 7016 both have policies that would make qualifying citizen-led amendments much more difficult, including making it harder for volunteers to launch a campaign, gather signatures, and deliver petitions. SB 7016 would also allow politicians to interfere with any citizen-led initiative, even letting an extremist politician kick a people’s amendment off the ballot.

Join us to oppose HB 1205, SB 7016, and all efforts to end citizen-led ballot initiatives. Fill out the form to add your name.
