Tell Costco: Members need access to medication abortion
The petition to Costco President and CEO Ron Vachris and members of the Costco Board reads:
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the abortion pill, mifepristone, can still be prescribed by telehealth, mailed to patients, and dispensed by certified pharmacies under current FDA rules. That means Costco could choose to offer mifepristone in its pharmacies today in states where abortion is legal — no in-person doctor visit required.
Many of us have Costco memberships because the company aligns with our values in its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and fair labor practices. Today, women are being arrested for taking the legal, safe, and medically necessary mifepristone and even dying due to certain states' extreme abortion bans. Clearly, there IS public demand for this medication, so we are left wondering if Costco even cares about women?
We urge you to lead with moral clarity as you have with DEI, collective bargaining, and other so-called 'hot-button' issues, put the health and well-being of your members first, and dispense mifepristone in states where abortion is legal.
While women are dying and being prosecuted for seeking abortions in states where there are bans, the abortion pill mifepristone has been a lifeline for many. Since 2023, its administration hasn't required an in-person health appointment, which means it can be mailed anywhere in the country. Not surprisingly, medication abortion--and especially by mail--has become the most common form of abortion in the United States. That's why anti-abortion extremists are fighting tooth and nail in the courts to block access. Unfortunately, their plan is working.
Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court preserved nationwide access to mifepristone under the FDA’s current rules while legal challenges continue. That means telehealth prescribing, mail delivery, and pharmacy dispensing of the medication remain legal under current federal policy.
While this ruling is an important victory, the fight is far from over. We must continue defending telehealth abortion access while also ramping up the fight to make sure that ALL blue state pharmacies, starting with Costco, dispense the pill.
Sign the petition now to Costco President and CEO Ron Vachris and members of the Costco Board, urging the company to dispense mifepristone in all states where abortion is legal.
