The petition to Congress reads:
As your constituents, we urge you to reject all attempts by the administration to have Congress relinquish its ‘power of the purse,’ allowing DOGE to cut, allocate, or reallocate funds. The Constitution grants the president and their administration the authority to spend the funds approved by Congress, but the administration does not have the power to cut, reallocate, or appropriate those funds. This is explicitly stated in the Constitution, is further outlined by Congress in the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act (ICA), and was confirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court. We urge you to preserve our system of checks and balances and say NO to President Trump’s request to officially claw back $9.4 billion in funding for public broadcasting and foreign aid. We have three branches of government, not one.
The so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has hijacked Congress’ constitutionally mandated power in order to gut vital programs and carry out illegal mass firings. The workers getting the ax are civil servants, scientists, national park rangers, domestic abuse counselors, immigration advocates, and so many more crucial federal employees who keep our country running and progressing.
The good news? A coalition of state attorneys general is fighting these illegal actions in court, and they are winning.
Now, it’s time for every member of Congress to take up the fight. Trump has formally requested that Congress cancel $9.4 billion in funding it already approved for programs like public broadcasting and foreign aid--after DOGE already froze billions in funds allocated for these programs, stopping the funds from reaching them. In essence, the Trump administration is testing the waters to see if Congress will legitimize DOGE and effectively end our system of checks and balances. We have less than 45 days to stop this from happening. Fill out the form to tell your legislators to reject Trump’s request asking Congress to relinquish its power.
