Tell CNN: Stop stoking anti-Muslim hate

    The petition to CNN reads:

Representative Rashida Tlaib never condemned Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's arrest of University of Michigan protesters because Nessel is Jewish, but because Tlaib supports the right to dissent and protest. Mischaracterizing Tlaib's remarks as antisemitic not only goes against CNN's journalistic integrity but puts Rep. Tlaib and, potentially, other Muslim Americans in danger. CNN needs to set the record straight and apologize to Rep. Tlaib immediately!

    Why is this important?

CNN is stoking the flames of hate at a dangerous time, when Islamophobia and baseless fears around Muslim activism are at a fever pitch--and when women of color leaders are increasingly attacked for speaking out, championing workplace diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and calling out the horrific violence against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Just recently, two of CNN's most prominent anchors, Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, falsely claimed that Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib--the only Palestinian American member of Congress--made an antisemitic remark toward a Jewish lawmaker.

Let's be clear: Rep. Tlaib did no such thing. Mischaracterizing her remarks not only goes against CNN's journalistic integrity but puts Rep. Tlaib and, potentially, other Muslim-Americans in danger!

Here's what actually happened: In a September 13 interview with Detroit Metro Times, Rep. Tlaib condemned Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel for setting a "dangerous precedent" by prosecuting University of Michigan students who peacefully protested against Israel's war on Gaza, saying, "We've had the right to dissent, the right to protest. We've done it for climate, the immigrant rights movement, for Black lives, and even around issues of injustice among water shutoffs. But it seems that the attorney general decided if the issue was Palestine, she was going to treat it differently, and that alone speaks volumes about possible biases within the agency she runs."

Both Rep. Tlaib and the Detroit Metro Times journalist who interviewed her affirm that Nessel's religion was never mentioned by either party in the interview. Yet CNN failed to fact-check and dangerously mischaracterized Rep. Tlaib's comments as an antisemitic attack against Nessel. This is beyond unacceptable.

CNN needs to set the record straight and apologize to Rep. Tlaib, now!
