Tell CA School Boards: Hold the Line for Student Athletes

The petition to California school boards reads:

Trump is attacking California from all angles, including schools. The DOJ is now threatening the education of nearly 6 million students in California's public schools over the participation of trans athletes in high school sports (which number in the single digits). We will not let these attacks impact our kids. Encourage your school board to hold the line: Continue to follow California state law allowing transgender athletes to compete, per the guidance of California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. Do not cave to the discriminatory biases and prejudices of President Donald Trump's administration.

Right now, the Trump administration is attacking California from all angles. Some of those attacks--like those we're seeing on our community members in Los Angeles--are already underway. Some are still threats. One of those threats is directed at California's youth: The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) threatened legal action against California public schools if they continued to follow the California law allowing transgender athletes to compete in high school sports.

Put simply, our federal government is threatening the education of nearly 6 million students in California's public schools over vulnerable students (trans athletes) that number in the single digits.

We know what this is really about: imposing traditional gender norms, testing governmental overreach, punishing California as a whole, and distracting the American public from what really matters. Republicans' antics are particularly cruel because they are scapegoating and intimidating children in our state.

We also know that the MAGA regime won’t stop the bullying there; The National Guard is present in Los Angeles right now following protests of ICE raids, and Trump has made clear that they are now preparing to cancel large swaths of federal funding across the state, beyond the Department of Education. These broader threats are connected to California’s support of trans student athletes, but are also part of Trump’s bigger feud with Governor Gavin Newsom and California at large. It’s time to set a precedent at the most local level--school boards--that we will not be bullied on any front.

The California Department of Education has already urged schools to resist Trump's threats. Now, the public needs to do the same, and the timing couldn't be more crucial. Demand that your local school board NOT cave to Trump and his cronies.
