As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on any bill that funds Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and do everything in your power to create paths to citizenship for all immigrants.

ICE now has an $85 billion budget, the most of any law enforcement agency in our country’s history. That money is being used to terrorize our communities. At least 32 people have died in ICE custody over the past year, making deaths in ICE custody the highest in decades. All U.S. residents, including citizens, are also in danger. Renée Nicole Good, a mother of three, was shot and killed by an ICE agent after dropping her son at school. She is but one of multiple Americans now shot dead by ICE and CBP agents. Videos show ICE agents dragging mothers from their cars, shoving women to the ground in front of their children, yanking a pregnant woman through the snow away from her nursing baby, and making schools sites of trauma.

The cruelty and scale of the violence is inherently anti-family and anti-American. As a taxpayer, I am horrified at the idea of my money funding such lawless and violent agencies.

In addition, I urge you to do everything in your power to expand paths to citizenship for all immigrants. Doing so is not separate from stopping ICE violence--it's how we actually stop it for good.

When millions of people live without legal status, it creates the perfect conditions for abuse and violence. And that violence clearly doesn’t just impact those without legal status, but all Americans. Real change means bringing people fully into our democracy, where they can organize, vote, and fight for their own rights. Robust, humanized pathways to citizenship would strengthen all of us: better wages, and a stronger economy.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Congress just agreed to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until February 13, giving Congress until the end of this week to decide on the agency’s budget for the rest of the year.

As a reminder, DHS runs Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), whose officers have been terrorizing our streets for months. What happens next will show whether our elected leaders side with the American people or with DHS’ rogue and violent enforcement force that has already cost too many lives.

It’s important to remember that defunding ICE isn’t a new demand. Immigrants have led the fight to abolish ICE and expand paths to citizenship for decades. But in this moment in history, when a majority of Americans oppose ICE’s violent state takeovers, we have a unique opportunity to demand real and lasting change. We won’t squander it.
