When a boy goes looking for a police officer costume at Party City, he gets a simple miniature of the real thing. But girls' costumes--even those marketed for "toddlers"--include a sexed-up "Cutie Cop," complete with a low-cut shirt and suggestively posed handcuffs on the box cover.Worse yet, Party City offers 16 different career-themed costumes for boys, with only three for girls: one of them a cheerleader. These costumes send a horrifying but all too familiar message to girls: that their only value is in their looks. When a mom posted a complaint on Party City's website, her comment was taken down and she was blocked from making further comments. But now the comment she posted has gone viral on the Internet, and Party City is really feeling the pressure. It's time for toy stores to stop treating little girls as sexual objects.
