Nicole Guerrero begged for hours to see a doctor, but the prison guards left her to suffer, overnight, through labor and delivery while locked in solitary confinement.

When she was finally born, her baby wasn't breathing, and prison staff didn't even try to resuscitate her.

It's sickening, but sadly this sort of treatment is not unusual. Dangerous, inhumane treatment of women in prison while they're in labor and delivery is all too common. Thirty-one states regularly shackle women by the arms, legs, and even stomachs--against medical advice for both the mothers and babies--throughout delivery. But right now, press attention on Guerrero's horrible case is shining a light on shackling and other inhumane practices that prisons use during labor and delivery. We have a chance to get justice for Nicole, and stop more deaths like this one, if we all speak out right away.
