Call Governor Gavin Newsom now: NO solitary confinement for pregnant people!

As Californians, we pride ourselves on leading social movements and setting a humane standard of treating one another for the rest of the country. That's why it's so appalling that a bill masquerading as "dignified care" for incarcerated pregnant people would allow for their solitary confinement--and is now on the governor's desk.

AB 2527, the so-called Dignified Care of Incarcerated Pregnancy Act, was originally drafted with good intentions. It was intended to provide dignified conditions for incarcerated pregnant people, including clean bottled water and nutritional meals, as well as to prohibit solitary confinement.

However, some legislators gave in to correctional authorities and amended the bill to allow the solitary confinement of incarcerated pregnant people for up to five days. Let's be clear: This newly amended bill is not aligned with the recommendations of the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice, or international standards, all of which call for a complete ban on solitary confinement for pregnant people.

This is not the standard we want to set in California or anywhere in the country.

Please pick up the phone now and call Governor Newsom to tell him to veto AB 2527, which would allow the solitary confinement of incarcerated pregnant people. We will provide you with a script and connect you with Gov. Newsom's office. Just have your phone handy and fill out the form on your left.

It's best to speak in your own words, but here are some points to get you started.

I am a constituent who lives in [city and zip code] and am calling on Governor Newsom to veto AB 2527, a bill misleadingly called Dignified Care of Incarcerated Pregnancy Act. This bill was amended and now allows for the solitary confinement of pregnant people.

This stance is not aligned with the recommendations of the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice, or international standards, all of which call for a complete ban on solitary confinement for pregnant people. It does not represent our values here in California and would set a terrible standard for the rest of the country.
