Survivors to California Commission on Judicial Performance: Hold Judge Persky Accountable

Survivors' letter to the California Commission on Judicial Performance:

We, sexual assault and domestic violence survivors and our loved ones, write to ask you to send a strong message that rape is never excusable by holding Judge Aaron Persky accountable for ignoring the will of the jury through his leniency when sentencing Brock Turner, a privileged white man convicted of three counts of sexual assault.

By focusing on how the assault impacted the perpetrator, rather than the victim, Judge Persky sent the message to survivors everywhere that they don't matter.

Furthermore, Judge Persky's statement that he takes the defendant at his word undermines the public's faith in the judicial system. The jury found Brock Turner guilty. His sentencing was a miscarriage of justice.

As long as you allow Judge Persky to stay on the bench, you are sending a message that the experiences of survivors impacted by sexual assault matter less than the "severe impact" perpetrators must face.

For the sake of people who have been or may someday be affected by perpetrators of violence, and for the sanctity of our justice system, we ask you to remove Judge Persky now.

Signed,

Survivors to California Commission on Judicial Performance: Hold Judge Persky Accountable

Last week, sexual assault survivors gathered to tell their stories and speak out against Aaron Persky--the judge who sentenced Brock Turner in the Stanford Rape Case--outside the meeting of the California Commission on Judicial Performance. It was a powerful moment, covered by every local TV station in San Francisco.

Your voice as a survivor of sexual assault is powerful. Will you join thousands of survivors from across the country in an open letter about the impact of decisions like Judge Persky's?

We're sending this note to the members of the Commission on Judicial Performance and to the press. Will you add your name?
