Hillary Clinton has been one of the greatest leaders and most outspoken advocates for women in her position as Secretary of State. With her leaving--and being replaced by John Kerry--our nation is losing an important and priceless female leader. And it's not just Clinton--with transitions in the Obama administration in 2013, we're going to lose another great female leader, Lisa Jackson at the Environmental Protection Agency. The most talked about replacements for the empty cabinet positions are all men--but it doesn't have to be that way.
Here's the big opportunity: Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is also leaving the cabinet, and there is a long list of qualified women who could fill that position. And having a woman run the Treasury isn't just symbolic--women are hit harder when the economy takes a downturn, they drive our economy, and make most of the purchasing decisions in families. Financial regulations have a big impact on women's lives. And yet a woman has never held our country's the top financial post.
President Obama will be back in Washington next week, and he'll start focusing on cabinet nominations right away. Can you sign this petition today asking President Obama to appoint a woman to be the Secretary of the Treasury?
