A troubling story that spread widely on social media has put light on a deeply disturbing issue: medical "virginity testing" is still happening in the United States.

The topic erupted after rapper T.I. revealed that he regularly instructs his 18-year-old daughter's gynecologist to perform a "virginity test"--inserting two fingers in a woman's vagina to check whether her hymen is still intact. Countless people are rightly outraged.

Around the world, virginity testing is used to control, punish, torture, and even murder young women who "fail." In fact, a survey of gynecologists in the U.S. found that 10% were asked by a patient's family member to perform the test and 34% said they actually performed it. Some admitted to lying for fear of endangering the patient.

In the U.S., there is no federal or state legislation that bans virginity testing. Even the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has no guidelines on this unscientific, invasive, and vile practice.

But the public outrage caused by T.I. could change that, if thousands of people act while this story is making rounds. Will you ask major U.S. medical associations like ACOG, American Public Health Association, American Medical Association, and American Nurses Association to issue official guidelines opposing "virginity testing" immediately?
