Laura Monterrosa, a refugee from El Salvador currently in a detention center in Texas, has reported being repeatedly sexually assaulted by a guard--and so far immigration officials have done nothing to keep her safe.
A few days ago, she tried to commit suicide after prison staff threatened to punish her for refusing to eat in the same cafeteria where her perpetrator continues to work. Their response? To put her in solitary confinement.
Now, there's a huge community outcry demanding Laura's release. The community's demands got prison staff to release her from solitary confinement. And if we build national outrage, the state will be forced to release her altogether.
The community is calling on U.S. Senator from Texas, John Cornyn to intervene. Congress members have successfully helped immigrants out of custody before--and Senator Cornyn is currently trying to pass bipartisan legislation to protect immigrants. Will you help Laura get away from her abuser and sign the petition to Texas Senator John Cornyn now, urging him to demand her release?
