Cancel student debt
Tell President Biden:
Forgive $50,000 of student debt per borrower
Why is this important?
Student debt is a problem for nearly all students in America, but the issue hits harder for Black women. According to the American Association of University Women, women hold nearly 2/3rds of America's $1.5 trillion student loan debt, and Black women bear the vast majority of that debt. And while white men borrow an average of $29,862; Black women take out nearly a third more at $37,558.
That reality puts Black families at a disadvantage when it comes to building wealth. According to the Brookings Institute, white households held, on average, $188,200 in wealth while Black families hold an 1/8th of that, at $24,100. Less wealth means less opportunity for Black families and far fewer funds a Black family can rely on to put their children through college. We must help correct these disparities – and forgiving student borrowers would go a long way in doing so.
Please sign our petition asking Pres. Biden to cancel $50,000 in student loans per borrower.
The petition to President Biden reads:
“The student debt crisis disproportionately impacts Black women and other women of color. Immediately cancel $50,000 of student debt per borrower.”
