Since the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision two years ago, medication abortions in the United States have spiked. In 2023, 63% of all abortions in the country were medication abortions. But right now, only 12 independent pharmacies in California are licensed to dispense mifepristone; chain pharmacies are not releasing data on the availability of the medication abortion drug. Only one out of 66 randomly shopped national chain pharmacies in California had mifepristone immediately available.

California will pay for pharmacies to get licensed to dispense mifepristone, as part of a program that, if successful, can serve as a model for the rest of the nation. And 70% of California community pharmacists surveyed said that they would be happy to prescribe mifepristone if they could. We need California pharmacy owners to take advantage of this program!
