Tell California Lawmakers: Pass Senate Bill 1394 To Protect Survivors

The petition to California lawmakers reads:

Pass Senate Bill 1394 to protect intimate partner violence survivors from abusers tracking their connected vehicles.

    Why is this important?

For survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), also known as domestic violence, a car with internet access can be a double-edged sword: While a car can be essential to a person escaping violence, a "connected" or "smart" car can enable abuse.

That's because abusers are increasingly using technology like connected cars to monitor and control their partners. It doesn't take much effort: Any person with remote access to a car can track its location, turn it on or off, lock and unlock doors, and even record videos.

In fact, in 2023, the Mozilla Foundation found that cars had the worst privacy and security of any product it had EVER reviewed.

Survivors are increasingly coming forward to share horror stories of being located and assaulted by partners who have remote access to their cars. The kicker? Car manufacturers are routinely denying survivors' requests to cut off their abusers' access.

Tell California state lawmakers that survivors of intimate partner violence shouldn't have to choose between owning a car and feeling safe.
