ACA provides my daughter with the insulin she needs to live

image

My daughter Addie was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 6. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin, which means Addie requires insulin injections every time she eats. Before the Affordable Care Act was fully implemented, my husband lost his job due to a company merger and NO ONE would give us insurance – at ANY cost – because of Addie’s Type 1. It was my first experience shopping for health insurance, and it was very eye opening. It was shocking to me – I didn’t know that denying insurance coverage to someone was even a possibility. It was then that I came to understand what the term “pre-existing condition” meant and how vulnerable anyone living with one is to the power and whims of insurance companies.

It was a terrifying time – one vial of insulin can cost up to $500. Addie needs insulin to live. Her monthly medications and supplies easily cost over $1,000/month without insurance. Thank God for Obamacare – I am no longer terrified of losing health insurance in case of unexpected job loss, and I no longer have to worry about Addie being denied insurance coverage due to her Type 1. Having insurance options that aren’t tied to employment and that prohibit discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions is a Godsend. The Affordable Care Act gave our family peace of mind and a safety net in the case of unforeseen circumstances.

Because of the ACA, my illness is in remission

image

I was able to get the care I needed for my Ulcerative Colitis through the ACA. When I tried to get coverage before, no company would give me insurance because of my condition. I am so grateful to President Barack Obama for doing this.

I now live in fear that Congress and the current president are going to take it away, my health will spiral down, and my life will end. We must figure out how to stop this.

Here’s a picture of me. Just know that the smile on my face is because my illness is in remission and without the insurance it wouldn’t be. Thank GOD for the Affordable Care Act.

The ACA allowed me to start my own business

I had done all the preparation to start my own business. I had the contracts and the contacts. I needed to have health insurance. I started at 54 years old, so I happened to be overweight and had high blood pressure. It’s treated with medication, but I had been denied insurance when I tried to get a bridge policy after transitioning jobs a couple of years before.

ACA means that I can get coverage even though I have these rather common pre-existing conditions. I make too much money to qualify for a subsidy – I just needed to have coverage so that I could take the next step forward in my career. Now I can own my own company and have health coverage.

The ACA is saving my son’s life

My son is currently in the hospital with arteriovenous malformation. He has had one brain surgery and will require many rounds of radiation. If coverage for people with pre-existing conditions is taken away, we likely will not be able to get healthcare coverage. And without healthcare coverage, I will be unable to afford the treatments for my son. Obamacare has made sure that my family is covered and my son can receive the care he desperately needs. Please do not take this away from us.

ACA allows my hard working parents to get preventative care

image

My parents are first-generation Korean-American citizens who have worked tirelessly to provide for our family. With Obamacare, they have been able to get proactive check-ups to keep their health stable. It is beneficial, not only to our family but also to our shared community, to have people checked out. The ACA allows for citizens to be healthy. And to take that away would be a big mistake – economically, morally, and socially.

You cannot put a price tag on the ability to breathe

image

My husband left me and quit his job in April 2011. As a result, my health insurance ended suddenly and unexpectedly. Because of the Affordable Care Act, I was able to purchase a policy that carried me through until I was able to receive employer-sponsored health care over a year later.

Again, in January 2015, I found myself unexpectedly without health insurance when the company I worked for moved to China. I was once again able to purchase coverage for myself until my employer-sponsored healthcare plan became available November 2016.

I am extremely grateful for this provision. More than I can say in words. I have had severe asthma since I was 4 years old (diagnosed in 1980). Many times in my adult life I have had to wait up to a year before my health insurance plan would cover my asthma medications. These are some of the most expensive medications, and I have often had to go without because I did not have $400 for the medication I needed.

I would like to say to anyone who will listen, “You cannot put a price tag on the ability to breathe well!” However, in this country before the Affordable Care Act, there was a price tag on the medication I needed. I could not pay it, and I suffered. Obamacare changed my life and gave me a sense of security I had never known in my lifetime. To undo this law would be a travesty to the people of the United States of America. Thank you.

The ACA saved my back and my life

image

I hadn’t had any type of insurance before ACA because I had back issues, which was considered a pre-existing condition. I tried everything, from massage therapy to homeopathic to chiropractic treatments. I even took a loan out to get stem-cell therapy and decompression treatments to ease the pain. To be honest, I had thoughts of suicide while I was sick because I saw no way out – until the ACA. In the end, back surgery was my only option, and I was finally able to get that surgery after the ACA!

I have sent so many emails and letters to President Barack Obama throughout the years. I have called my senators numerous times as well. I also attended the rally in San Francisco on Jan. 15 while I was there visiting my sister.

It is easy for these men and the GOP to want to do away with ACA – they have no worries. They receive health care for life  at the tax payers’ expense! Shame, shame, shame on the president and his cronies for wanting to gut the ACA.

ACA gives me a sense of security I never had

In November of 2016, I made the last monthly payment on a hospital bill for the emergency surgery I had in 2011. I still owe the anesthesiologist nearly $1,000 for the same operation. I had no health insurance at the time of the accident, and if the hospital, the surgeon, and the others had not accepted my paperwork and taken me on as a charity case, I would have gone bankrupt and lost everything I had worked my whole life for.

I signed up for Obamacare at the first opportunity, and I have been completely satisfied with it from day one. The sense of security about being protected in case of another accident is priceless.
