Louisiana: Put Women's Health First

To Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals:

"The 'Declaration of Emergency' regulations issued by the Department of Health and Hospitals will make it nearly impossible for women to access safe, constitutionally protected medical care, a right that has been guaranteed in our state for over 40 years. Women and families in Louisiana deserve quality, affordable and accessible healthcare. The proposed rules will hurt these women. The regulations are medically unnecessary, prohibitively expensive to implement, and make it nearly impossible for the clinic to care for patients in the most medically appropriate manner. I urge the DHH to adopt commonsense revisions to these policies and to put women’s health first."

    Update: Victory!

After nearly 300 UltraViolet Louisiana members joined allies to submit public comments hand-delivered by the New Orleans Abortion Fund, the DHH announced even before the hearing that it would rescind and rewrite the proposals, which we continue to monitor. Thanks for taking action!

On Feburary 4th, the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) will hold a hearing on new regulations that could close all 5 of Louisiana's remaining reproductive care clinics, for no reason other than to deny women access to health care. One such proposal, drafted without any input from women's health experts, requires clinics to triple the size of procedure rooms beyond even what hospitals require. Another even dictates what kind of materials clinics must install on their floors!

If these regulations become law and force clinics to close, women will either have to risk an unsafe and illegal abortion or take time off to travel to another state.

We can't let this happen, or the rights of women everywhere are threatened. DHH is asking for public comments and we need your voice. Our allies at the New Orleans Abortion Fund, who are gathering to testify in person, will hand-deliver your comments to DHH members in charge of the decision.

Can you sign the petition opposing these absurd regulations? You can also include your personal comment at left.
